About Me

I am Alfia Maha, a textile artist and master’s student at Southern Illinois University’s Art and Design department. I was born on August 15, 1995, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and spent my formative years in my home country, where I developed a deep passion for art.
I earned my undergraduate degree from Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in the United States, where I am delving into complex themes through my artwork.
As a wife and mother to a young son, my personal experiences have greatly influenced my recent projects, which focus on the intricacies of motherhood. Through my art, I aim to capture the emotional depth and resilience that define a mother’s journey.
I am expected to graduate in Spring 2025. With my artistic vision and dedication, I hope to make a meaningful impact in the world of textile art.

In this artwork, I wanted to capture the image of a Bengali working mother, using traditional Bengali folk-art style. In rural villages, mothers who are farm laborers often create makeshift carrying bags for their children out of cloth, tying them to their bodies while they go to work. There’s usually no one else to look after the child, or perhaps the mother simply doesn’t want to be separated from her child, so she brings them along while she works to earn a living. I wanted to represent this scene through embroidery, focusing on the deep, almost magical bond between mother and child. The idea was to express that connection through the simple, yet powerful, interweaving of threads.
